Spot Information

Cabarete’s Kitebeach:

Just 2.5 km downwind from Vela Windsurf Cabarete headquarters lies Cabarete’s Kitebeach, one of the best spots for kite boarding in the world. It has quickly become a popular and famous venue with kiteboarders from all over the world.

In the late morning, Kitebeach an ideal place for beginners to learn and becomes an awesome place to ride for those who are more advanced in the afternoon. Like Cabarete Bay, the water temperature is a balmy 27°C (81°F) all year so you can leave your bulky wetsuit at home. A lycra top or rashguard will help protect from the Caribbean sun.

The wind is sideshore to side-offshore from the right. During the winter, the winds are dominated by fronts moving through the northern Caribbean, giving cycles of strong wind days followed by a period of lighter conditions. The tradewinds return in March for more consistent conditions that last until October. The summer offers the best wind conditions but smaller waves than winter and spring.

Kitebeach is farther North than Cabarete Bay and therefore suffers from much less of a wind shadow. This allows riders to launch their kites and plane immediately from the water’s edge.

On most days, the reef protects the beach from larger waves. However, most experienced kiters will venture beyond the reef to the open water or to ride the waves.
